1:1 and the HS Library

Design for Collaboration and Flexibilty

The WHY?
Why did we decide to make these changes to the HS Library Program?
The Directors of Elementary and Secondary Education as well as the Supervisor of Technology Services met with me to discuss the vision for the HS Library. With the implementation of 1:1 in our district we have the opportunity to look at how to restructure the library program and the library facility. We discussed the vision and the changes that would be possible and decided to move ahead with a shared vision of the HS Library as the Central Hub or Learning Commons for the building.

Literacy Center and Comfortable Seating.
Revitalize the library with comfortable seating for students to work collaboratively or to work independently or to relax. This area would also have power adapters in the seating and along the wall. This would encourage student usage of the library commons on an ongoing basis.
Rearrange the collection to place the Fiction section in the front of the library to create the Literacy Center area with the new seating area.

Technology Classroom Space

Providing access to technology assistance for our HS 1:1 program both for the hardware and the software questions that students have at CV. This would include creating an opening into the library from the current AV room but would also include expert help stations for software support from the new student technology experts as well as the library media staff.

Refreshment Center Area for Virtual Academy Students

Future Planning: Renovate the library workroom to encompass a refreshment service for events or in an ongoing service to the high school

Environment and Entrance to the Library

Creating a welcoming entrance to the library facility that encourages student and faculty participation in the Learning Commons.  This would include widening the entrance way and adding windows or larger doorway opening.

Collaborative Work space

Flexible work space within the library with both high top tables, as well as tables and seating that can be rearranged based on group size or project need. This would replace the current classroom/lab space and convert it to a collaborative and flexible learning area.

Presentation Areas

Keeping the furniture flexible, movable and on wheels so that the space can be used for various functions through out the day and the year!!
Where did the funding come from?

1. Keystones to Technology Grant.
Our district has been awarded a KTO Grant -  This funding is for literacy initiatives with the focus on Early Literacy, Transitions from one level to the next and HS Literacy with RTII.  Once the library plans were presented, the Assistant Superitendent, Dr. Cartwright reviewed the plans and allocated the appropriator resources for the project.

2. District Funding
Portions of the project that included Painting and Repairs are part of the regular budget. The renovations to the entrance and the refreshment area will take capital allocations or building funding and are in the process of review.

3. CVEF GRANT  - Conestoga Valley Education Foundation Grant
The next phase will be to add a signage system that will feature tech tips and rolling resources. This is the next grant I will need to work towards completing. Proposed ideas include a Wireless Interactive project $1800 per – at least three areas throughout the library
Digital workspaces -Tables and seating and TV displays – at least three stations for technology support and collaboration stations.
